Zhu Ling Poisoning Case: Potential Turning Point as Chinese Supreme Prosecution Rarely Accepts

Rumors have circulated alleging a “private relationship” between Sun Yueqi, the grandfather of Sun Wei, and the former leader of the Chinese Communist Party, Jiang Zemin. Towards the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006, there were online disclosures claiming that prior to his passing, Sun Yueqi interceded on behalf of his granddaughter, Sun Wei, with Jiang Zemin, who assured him, “As long as I, Jiang Zemin, am alive, your granddaughter will not go to prison.”

On May 1, 2024, a significant development surfaced in the Zhu Ling poisoning case involving the Tsinghua University student. The Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) has remarkably accepted the application submitted by Zhu Ling’s parents, prompting a reopening of the investigation into the case, sparking widespread attention.

On May 1, the WeChat public account “Zhu Ling, We Are with You” announced that there had been a recent development in the “Tsinghua Thallium Poisoning Case.” Recently, the “Investigation Supervision Application” submitted by Zhu Ling’s parents to the Supreme People’s Procuratorate has been accepted.

Zhu Ling’s mother received a text notification from the Supreme People’s Procuratorate: “Zhu Mingxin: Hello! Your letter has been received. According to relevant legal provisions, our office has forwarded your letter to the Beijing People’s Procuratorate for review and handling in accordance with the law.”

Subsequently, Zhu Ling’s mother received another text notification from the Beijing People’s Procuratorate: “Zhu Mingxin, hello! Our office has received the petition materials transferred by the Supreme People’s Procuratorate and has transferred them to the relevant department for processing in accordance with the law. Contact information: 0105876XXXX. You can check through the online procuratorate service center after one day.”

Zhu Ling’s father, Wu Chengzhi, recently confirmed to mainland media that on April 15, he had submitted the “Investigation Supervision Application” to the Supreme People’s Procuratorate by postal mail, requesting a reopening of the investigation into Zhu Ling’s poisoning case.

The WeChat public account “Zhu Ling, We Are with You” stated that the “Investigation Supervision Application” submitted by Zhu Ling’s mother pointed out illegal actions by relevant departments in the investigation of Zhu Ling’s poisoning case: “First, illegally closing the case; second, failing to match the identified suspect with the facts; third, illegally lifting the travel restrictions on Sun and changing his identity information; fourth, failing to act on the grounds of lacking ‘direct evidence,’ which is unfounded by law.”

The public account stated that they would continue to pay attention to the follow-up actions of the Beijing People’s Procuratorate.

Zhu Ling was born in November 1973 and was a student of Tsinghua University’s Class of ’92. In December 1994, at the age of 21, Zhu Ling was hospitalized with a sudden strange illness.

In April 1995, Zhu Ling was diagnosed with thallium poisoning. The poisoning left her paralyzed and with neurological damage, rendering her unable to care for herself, and she was cared for by her elderly parents for many years.

At that time, Sun Wei, Zhu Ling’s roommate at Tsinghua University, was considered the only suspect, and the Beijing police once identified the murderer as someone close to Zhu Ling. However, the case was not resolved due to reasons such as delayed poisoning test reports, lack of surveillance facilities at relevant locations, and loss of criminal evidence.

Nearly 30 years after the “thallium poisoning” incident, Zhu Ling passed away on December 22, 2023, in Beijing.

The only suspect in the case, Sun Wei, later emigrated to the United States and then changed his name and moved to Australia. The Australian newspaper “The Australian” reported in January this year that Sun Wei, now known as Sun Shiyan, owns five properties in Australia and his image was revealed for the first time.

According to previous reports by the media, the reason why the Zhu Ling poisoning case has not been resolved for a long time is because Sun Wei’s family has a background of high-ranking officials. His grandfather, Sun Yueqi, was the Vice Chairman and Honorary Chairman of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Kuomintang; his cousin, Sun Fuling, served as Deputy Mayor of Beijing and Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

The Zhu Ling poisoning case has always attracted public attention. The rare acceptance of the case by the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the CCP has sparked heated discussions, with many mainland Chinese netizens leaving comments implying judicial injustice by the CCP and protection of the perpetrator.

“The scope is so small, yet they used the excuse to close the case. Even if a lie detector could have revealed the criminal, such a malicious person was let go, and even changed names and lived freely abroad. Heaven has eyes, I hope that devil won’t escape punishment.”

“I guess it’s still not very useful. Zhu’s father himself said everyone knows who it is, but the evidence has been destroyed, and even the leaders of the Ministry of Public Security personally replied to him. I sincerely hope Zhu Ling gets justice.”
