Chinese star Zhao Liying’s divorce shows how much China has changed

What is the status of women in China today? What kind of era is China in? Masculine and feminist rights are “fighting each other” on the Internet in China, and gender antagonism has become a concern of people. However, the day when the Chinese actress Zhao Liying, who has attracted attention on both sides of the strait, and the Chinese actor Feng Shaofeng announced their divorce, it proved to the outside world that although everyone has different opinions on the status of Chinese women, Chinese society and China Public opinion and the younger generation have indeed changed.

Zhao Liying and Feng Shaofeng

In 2008, Hong Kong star Edison Chen and Hong Kong actresses were widely criticized for their “dirty photos”. Edison Chen apologized after the “sexual photo gate” and suffered a setback in the entertainment industry. The actress also apologized for her “too simple, sometimes naive”, but was accused of acting by China’s mainstream public opinion.

More than eight years later, in 2017, a mainland Chinese host said on the show that “he is also a victim” and that “what each of us says about this matter has also affected him.” “Do we owe Edison an apology?” was a hot topic on the public opinion field in mainland China at that time, and by then, the affected actors and actresses had gradually shaken off the gloom.

But in the field of public opinion in China, how to deal with victims like “sexual photo gate”, the discussion has not subsided.

When Chinese-born, American-born public figure Wendi Deng divorced in 2013, many reports and comments in the Chinese media said she was “too strong.”

In 2018, mainland Chinese star Zhang Yuqi divorced, and there were even rumors that she had beaten her ex-husband. As a result, various “inspirational chicken soup articles” appeared in the Chinese public opinion field at that time. A Chinese author wrote an analysis, “For Zhang Yuqi’s marriage change, what everyone cares about most is the fearlessness that this woman shows in front of marriage.”

In the past, women who were wronged and tolerated in their marriages were lucky to marry a wishful man. Women nowadays will not tolerate in marriages – this analysis at that time became a popular article in China.

And this point of view, after Zhang Yuqi’s divorce, until now, “Zhang Yuqi’s coolness” is still mentioned from time to time.

In 2021, Zhao Liying and Feng Shaofeng announced their divorce. Within two hours, Zhao Liying’s Weibo fans increased by more than 100,000. The Weibo comments did not say “the woman is too strong”, but “more and more women live transparently.”

A few days ago, some “feminist groups” on the Chinese social platform Douban were shut down. Suddenly, “the dilemma of the Chinese feminist movement” and “the dilemma of the Chinese feminist” became the discussion points.

It is not only in the media outside of China, but also in mainland China, there is no lack of such doubts.

However, when faced with women and some “victimized men” related issues, the new generation of online public opinion led by the post-1990s and post-2000s in China has indeed changed significantly.

China’s land is vast, and every place has development gaps. In 2020, the principal of a high school in Yunnan denounced and rejected a female alumnus’ donation because she is a full-time wife, which aroused heated public opinion in China.

In reality, the plight of Chinese women does exist.

But in the online arena, whether in drama or news events, mainstream public opinion (especially women) increasingly expects to see a group of women who can beat up scum, work independently, and protect their families.

In recent years of mainland Chinese dramas, female roles that “rely on men’s protection” are often criticized, and TV dramas dominated by “big heroines” dominate. In reality, being “too strong” or “too independent” is no longer a reason to review the divorce of female celebrities, but rather an advantage.

In the ranking of the “Global Gender Gap Report” released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) every year, China’s ranking is not very attractive (of course, different people have different opinions), and there are indeed many parts to be improved.

However, the various hot topics in recent years have indeed proved that the current public opinion is far from the “previous generation public opinion” regarding women, marriage, love, family, and sexual relations.
