China considers letting Tencent and ByteDance open up content to search engines

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is discussing opening up hundreds of millions of articles in Tencent’s WeChat to search engines like Baidu, a move that could further remove online barriers and shake up China’s Internet advertising space.

One of the people familiar with the matter said the MIIT is also considering letting short videos from ByteDance’s app Douyin be displayed in search results.

The regulator is reportedly collecting feedback from the companies, and it’s unclear whether it will move forward. Source
