On July 14th, Chinese netizens filmed and reported that while consuming Uni-President’s “Old Temple Pickled Cabbage Beef Noodles”, they discovered a rat head with hair inside the noodles. “This is a rat head, from the pickled cabbage, yes, I took a bite.”
Kunshan Uni-President Food Limited stated they have contacted the consumer and specific details require confirmation and verification.
Previously, Uni-President responded to netizens regarding the quality issue of pickled cabbage, stating that during production, more than 300 tests are conducted, ensuring consumers can safely consume the product.
The images shared by the netizen show an unidentified object next to the pickled cabbage packet, which upon closer inspection appears to have sharp teeth and whiskers.
“Concerned Citizen” reported that Mr. Wu from Hangzhou, Zhejiang, on July 14th, purchased Uni-President’s “Old Temple Pickled Cabbage Beef Noodles” from a local store, only to find a rat head while eating that night. “I was about to eat the pickled cabbage, scooped it up and put it in my mouth, it was very fishy, I spat it out and found it had hair and even teeth, it was a rat head.”
Mr. Wu has filed a complaint with the local market supervision department. On the afternoon of July 15th, he filmed an update saying, “Uni-President staff are handling the matter,” but the related video is currently unavailable.
A staff member from Kunshan Uni-President Food Limited stated they have assigned a specialist to contact the consumer, and specific details need to be confirmed and verified. The pickled cabbage packets come from a collaborating supplier, with QR codes on the packaging that can be scanned to check the origin and production factory.
According to reports, on the packaging of Uni-President’s “Old Temple Pickled Cabbage Beef Noodles”, there is a label that reads “Visible in the reassuring factory, scan to watch the production line,” and scanning the adjacent QR code allows viewing of videos related to Uni-President instant noodles production lines and the Old Temple pickled cabbage fermentation room.
Mainland China has repeatedly exposed poor conditions in pickled cabbage production processes and factory environments. Uni-President previously responded to netizens’ concerns about pickled cabbage, stating, “Our pickled cabbage undergoes first-round fermentation in epoxy resin pools that meet food-grade material requirements, followed by a second-round fermentation in ceramic jars after three rounds of cleaning. From raw materials to production, more than 300 tests are conducted during the production process. Please rest assured.”
