McDonald’s New Vegetable Wrap Causes Illness Concern in China

McDonald’s in Mainland China is currently offering a new item called “Crunchy Vegetable Wrap”, and many people are eager to try it.

However, some customers took to Weibo afterwards to express their discomfort, reporting symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and even fever and dizziness after consumption. They humorously commented, “Eat 9 out of 10 and end up in the hospital”, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction.

The “Crunchy Vegetable Wrap” was launched on February 26th, described on the official website as a local original with a filling of vegetables, bamboo shoots, shredded wood ear fungus, shredded carrots, and crispy pork wrapped in a tortilla.

While it garnered enthusiasm upon release, local media revealed posts from netizens claiming to have ended up in the hospital after consuming the wrap, prompting numerous complaints.

Some netizens reported feeling nauseous after only consuming half a wrap and rushing to the bathroom to vomit. Others reported similar symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness.

Many online posts criticized the wrap, with comments such as “Out of 10 people around me, 9 vomited after eating it, don’t underestimate it” and “I never thought McDonald’s Crunchy Vegetable Wrap would make me feverish”.

As of the morning of the 7th, McDonald’s China has yet to respond to the issue. However, some netizens suspect two possible reasons for the adverse reactions: first, the food might have been too spicy, causing gastrointestinal irritation; second, the wood ear fungus in the wrap may have gone bad. With rising temperatures in recent days, especially in Guangdong where humidity has increased, it’s possible that the wood ear fungus, which is difficult to preserve under such conditions, may have been contaminated by toxic bacteria, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and nausea. However, none of these claims have been confirmed.
