Love truly makes people blind! Recently, there’s been a shocking case of online romance scam in mainland China. A mainland Chinese man, using his sweet and crisp “voice,” pretended to be a beautiful woman and engaged in romantic relationships with victims, thereby extorting nearly 300,000 RMB from five young men.
One victim even organized a wedding banquet with forty tables, only to be left empty-handed. Among the victims were also two college students, who, despite yearning for love, immediately experienced the pain of heartbreak.
According to the report by “Shenzhen News Network,” a fraud case occurred recently in Wanzhou District, Chongqing Municipality. A man surnamed Lan, due to unemployment and financial difficulties, used his naturally “sweet female voice” to impersonate a woman and engage in romantic relationships with five unmarried men, scamming them out of a total of over 300,000 RMB.
The victims averaged only 26 years old, with two of them being college students. What they had in common was their significant expectations towards marriage.
According to “Headline News,” a 25-year-old man named Hu from Wanzhou reported to the police, claiming that he met a sophomore female student named “Mengmeng” online. Due to various reasons cited by the woman, he transferred 20,000 RMB to her within just over 10 days. It wasn’t until he reported the case that he realized he might have been deceived, as he had never even met her in person.
The police pointed out that “Mengmeng” was actually a 31-year-old man surnamed Lan living in Wanzhou. During interrogation, Lan admitted to the fraud.
He used his naturally feminine voice and even stole the profile picture of a female internet celebrity to attract many suitors. He would actively send voice messages, have phone calls, and even sing love songs with them. As they became more familiar and their feelings warmed up, he would feign poverty and continuously extort money from the victims using various excuses.
One victim, named Wen, had even scheduled a wedding date with “Mengmeng” in January 2024 and arranged for over 40 banquets in his hometown. However, on the wedding day, he didn’t even catch a glimpse of the bride, resulting in a loss of over 30,000 RMB.
Lan even sang A-Mei’s “If You Heard” directly in the police station, stunning the officers present with his sweet female voice. The incident sparked discussions online, with many netizens expressing admiration for Wen’s audacity in arranging 40 banquets without even meeting the bride in person.
