A 16-year-old boy, known as Bin Bin, from Guangzhou, has been drinking nearly 9 liters of water every day and constantly eating food. His father noticed a problem during the summer vacation of 2021, fearing that Bin Bin might have kidney problems or diabetes. However, at that time, all the test results came back normal, and Bin Bin’s water intake decreased, so no further treatment was pursued.
However, a year later, Bin Bin’s behavior became abnormal, he became easily angered, initially thought to be treated as adolescent depression, but after several months with no improvement, Bin Bin began experiencing vision loss leading to frequent falls. After numerous consultations, he was eventually diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following the tumor removal surgery, Bin Bin experienced short-term memory loss, his weight increased from 110 pounds (50 kilograms) to 150 pounds (75 kilograms), and his personality changed drastically, causing distress to his family. “His personality is completely different from before, we have to keep an eye on him all the time, you never know what he’s going to do in the next second.”
However, the nightmare was not over. Bin Bin was brought to the Guangdong Sanjiu Brain Hospital in May 2023 for further treatment, where he was diagnosed with a mixed germ cell tumor, and there were signs of recurrence after surgery. Due to endocrine disorders combined with lung infection, Bin Bin repeatedly experienced symptoms such as fever, general swelling, and irritability.
After undergoing four rounds of radiation therapy, Bin Bin’s body temperature returned to normal, and his emotions stabilized, with his daily water intake being controlled to around 3 liters. Doctors cautioned that patients with typical “triad syndrome” of saddle area germ cell tumors like Bin Bin often exhibit four symptoms: “polydipsia,” “polyuria,” “accompanied by visual impairment,” and “endocrine disorders.” If similar symptoms occur, timely medical attention is necessary.
