Inner Mongolia’s Hulunbuir Unveils Spectacular ‘Cold Night Light Pillars’ Phenomenon, Rivalling Grandeur of Aurora

Though the Spring Equinox has passed, the northern regions of China still endure harsh winter conditions. Recently, Inner Mongolia’s Hulunbuir has witnessed the awe-inspiring phenomenon of “Cold Night Light Pillars,” where beams of light shoot straight into the night sky.

According to reports from China News Network, temperatures in Hulunbuir City are still hovering around -20°C. In the early hours of Wednesday (the 6th), the phenomenon of “Cold Night Light Pillars” appeared in the night sky of Hailar District in Hulunbuir City. Beams of light piercing through the darkness created a surreal and captivating scene.

Local residents described seeing several beams of light outside their windows around 5 a.m. Similar occurrences had been observed previously, but they didn’t last long. This time, the display lasted for about half an hour before gradually fading as dawn approached. One resident remarked, “The captured images hardly convey the awe-inspiring sight witnessed by the naked eye.”

It’s understood that “Cold Night Light Pillars” are a type of ice halo phenomenon comparable to the auroras. These pillars of light form as a result of light reflection by ice crystals in the atmosphere. Under the reflection of these ice crystals, city lights, neon signs, and other sources of light transform into colorful columns shooting into the sky.
