Chinese universities punish premarital sex, flirted with overnight arrival in Afghanistan

A rule in the graduate student handbook of Dalian University of Technology in Liaoning Province, China, prohibiting students from having sex without marriage has been widely circulated on the Chinese Internet, although staff of the university revealed on September 15 that the rule had been withdrawn, but the incident still sparked heated discussions among Chinese netizens. Subsequently, a number of universities in China, including Fudan University in Shanghai, were found to have similar rules.

There were rumors that Dalian University of Technology’s graduate student handbook clearly states that those who have unmarried sex during their studies will be given more than a demerit, which immediately sparked a lot of controversy. The university’s graduate student handbook, which was posted on the Internet by a self-proclaimed student, showed no mention of information related to sexual behavior. 15, a staff member at the graduate school office of Dalian University of Technology said that the above provision was no longer in place.

The report said that the relevant provisions are in fact the contents of the old handbook, in the official website of the Dalian University of Technology Academic Affairs Office, published on April 6, 2006, the “Dalian University of Technology disciplinary regulations for college students,” clearly “unmarried sex during the study period, depending on the severity of the circumstances, to be placed on probation, ordered to withdraw or expelled from school “. And in the “Dalian University of Technology student disciplinary regulations” issued on October 20, 2014, there are still relevant provisions.

In fact, besides Dalian University of Technology, several other universities in China have similar regulations. For example, in the Regulations on Disciplinary Punishments for Students of Fudan University, which is published on Fudan University’s open information website, it is clear that those who engage in non-marital sex during school will be given a warning or more depending on the circumstances. Zhejiang University in the “Zhejiang University student disciplinary measures” is clear that students who have non-marital sex, resulting in adverse consequences, will be given a demerit or probationary punishment.

Wuhan Huazhong Normal University issued in November 2020, “Huazhong Normal University undergraduate students disciplinary sanctions and corrective education management rules,” mentioned that students who have illegal cohabitation with the opposite sex on or off campus, given a demerit and above. Wuhan University of Science and Technology has also specified that students who share a bed with a man or woman in the student dormitory, or stay in a dormitory of the opposite sex, will be placed on probation.

For many Chinese universities still retain the “students will be punished for unmarried sex” rule, many mainland netizens are hotly debated, some Chinese people criticize the relevant rules are obviously old and outdated, and its not much practical effect, the actual impact on students is very small, and some people point out and think that its operability is not strong, there will be no school can afford the cost of large-scale implementation. The cost of large-scale implementation will not be affordable, “unless it is really targeted blasting to catch adultery in bed, otherwise two people run away from the school, who caught the control?”

Many Chinese Internet users who do not agree with the regulations have also flirted or sarcastic about this, “it seems that there is no shortage of population at all”, “abstinence before marriage can force college students to get married”, “a guess, this rule does not apply to international students”, “I remember sleeping in China last night, how could I wake up in Afghanistan.” Source
