China’s mobile phone shipments fell 32% year-on-year to 23 million in May

China’s mobile phone shipments in May 2021 were 22.968 million, a year-on-year decrease of 32.0%, of which 16.739 million were 5G mobile phones, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%, according to the analysis report on the operation of China’s mobile phone market in May 2021 released by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (hereinafter referred to as the Institute) on June 16.

Judging from the data for the first five months of 2021, China’s mobile phone market has maintained rapid growth, showing an overall upward trend, among which 5G mobile phones have achieved substantial growth. Data shows that from January to May, the total mobile phone shipments in the Chinese market totaled 148 million units, a year-on-year increase of 19.3%, of which 108 million were 5G mobile phones, a year-on-year increase of 134.4%. According to a report previously released by the Institute, in April, the overall shipment of China’s mobile phone market reached 27.486 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 34.1%.

According to the report released today, mobile phone shipments in the Chinese market in April and May declined year-on-year, mainly due to three factors: First, the mobile phone shipments in the Chinese market in the first quarter increased by more than 100% year-on-year, and demand was released ahead of schedule; The second is the tight supply of mobile phone chips in the upstream of the industrial chain; The third is that Huawei’s shipments have fallen sharply, and other manufacturers have failed to fully make up for the vacancy of Huawei.

From the perspective of the development of 5G mobile phones, in May 2021, the shipment of 5G mobile phones in the Chinese market was 16.739 million units, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%, accounting for 72.9% of mobile phone shipments in the same period; 10 new models were launched to the market, accounting for mobile phones in the same period 37.0% of the number of new models on the market. From January to May of 2021, the shipment of 5G mobile phones in the Chinese market is 108 million units, a year-on-year increase of 134.4%, accounting for 72.8% of the mobile phone shipments in the same period; 90 new models were launched to the market, accounting for 49.7% of the number of new mobile phone models on the market in the same period.

From the perspective of the composition of foreign brands in China’s mobile phone market, in May 2021, China’s domestic brand mobile phones shipment was 19.249 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 37.8%, accounting for 83.8% of mobile phone shipments during the same period; 25 new models were launched to the market, a year-on-year decrease of 16.7%, accounting for 92.6% of the number of new models of mobile phones on the market during the same period. From January to May, China’s domestic branded mobile phone shipments totaled 131 million units, a year-on-year increase of 16.7%, accounting for 88.0% of mobile phone shipments during the same period; a total of 166 new models were launched to the market, an increase of 11.4% year-on-year, accounting for 91.7% of the number of new mobile phones launched in the same period.

In terms of China’s smartphone development, the report pointed out that in May 2021, smartphone shipments were 22.604 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 30.8% and accounting for 98.4% of mobile phone shipments in the same period. From January to May, smartphone shipments were 146 million units, a year-on-year increase of 20.3%, accounting for 98.2% of mobile phone shipments in the same period.
