China Game Industry and Market Analysis Report 2021

China’s game industry has developed for more than ten years and has formed a huge industry scale. From the perspective of market segments, in 2020, the actual sales revenue of China’s mobile game market continued to rise, the client game market and the web game market continued to shrink, and the actual sales revenue and market share declined significantly.

Sales revenue increases year by year, and the growth rate fluctuates greatly

In 2020, the actual sales revenue of the Chinese game market was 278.687 billion yuan, an increase of 47.81 billion yuan over 2019, a year-on-year increase of 20.71%, maintaining rapid growth. In the first quarter of 2021, game manufacturers launched New Year’s Day and Spring Festival holiday activities, users’ desire for consumption increased, the actual sales revenue of China’s game industry achieved staged growth, and many game products achieved relatively good results.

In the first quarter of 2021, the actual sales revenue of the Chinese game market was 77.035 billion yuan, which was driven by the increase in the actual sales revenue of mobile games, a year-on-year increase of 5.32%.

The rapid increase in the scale of the mobile game market drives the growth of China’s game industry

Today’s games mostly refer to electronic games that operate on various platforms. Video games have a broad audience base. It involves the development, operation, sales and other economic fields of electronic games, and forms its own industrial chain. As an entertainment consumer product, with the increasingly powerful network economy, the electronic game economy has become a very important part of the entertainment industry.

In the current situation, mobile terminal games are game software running on smart phones (ie, mobile games in this report), and the operating systems of smart phones are mostly iOS and Android.

Judging from the changes in the actual sales revenue of the main market segments of the Chinese game industry, in 2020, the actual sales revenue of China’s mobile game market continued to rise, the client game market and the web game market continued to shrink, and the actual sales revenue dropped significantly.

In 2020, the actual sales revenue of China’s mobile game market reached 209.676 billion yuan; the actual sales revenue of the client game market reached 55.920 billion yuan; the actual sales revenue of the web game market reached 7.608 billion yuan.

From the perspective of the growth rate trend, the actual sales growth rate of the Chinese client game market has been relatively stable since 2015. The actual sales revenue growth rate of the mobile game market and the web game market has shown a downward trend, but the actual sales revenue growth rate of the mobile game market is significantly higher than the actual sales revenue growth rate of the game industry, indicating that the sales revenue growth of the mobile game market has a huge pulling effect on the growth of the entire game industry.

It is worth noting that although the sales revenue growth rate of China’s mobile game market has shown a downward trend as a whole, the scale of China’s mobile market still maintains a trend of year-on-year growth, indicating that China’s mobile game market is gradually entering the stage of stock optimization.

The proportion of the Chinese mobile game market gradually surpasses other markets, reaching 75% in 2020

From the perspective of changes in the market structure of China’s game industry, in the first quarter of 2014-2021, the proportion of China’s mobile game market has increased year by year, while the proportion of client game market and web game market has decreased year by year.

After 2015, with the continuous popularization of smartphones, mobile devices have become the first choice for leisure due to their ease of portability and other conveniences. With the development of 4G and cloud games, the proportion of the mobile game market has gradually surpassed other markets.

In 2020, China’s mobile game market accounted for 75% of the market. As of the first quarter of 2021, China’s mobile game market accounted for 76% of the market. With the development of 5G technology, mobile games are facing a more stable market upside.
