The “Notice on the Results of Furniture Product Quality Supervision and Sampling Checks in 2020” recently released by the Shenzhen Municipal Market Supervision Administration website shows that in the second quarter of 2020, the Shenzhen Municipal Market Supervision Administration has organized and carried out random checks on the quality of furniture products. A total of 170 batches of products sold by 81 companies were spot-checked this time, and 4 batches of unqualified samples were found. The unqualified items were mainly formaldehyde emissions.
Manufacturers of unqualified products include: Kingkoil (Shanghai) Bedding Co., Ltd., Hookafo Furniture (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Motet Furniture Co., Ltd., Zhongshan Yili Office Furniture Co., Ltd. and other (nominal) production units.
Formaldehyde has been recognized as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Formaldehyde is mainly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. Direct contact with formaldehyde can cause allergic dermatitis, stains, and necrosis. Inhalation of high concentrations of formaldehyde can induce bronchial asthma. Frequent inhalation of a small amount of formaldehyde can cause chronic poisonings, such as mucosal congestion, skin irritation, and allergic dermatitis. Long-term exposure to low-dose formaldehyde can cause chronic respiratory diseases, nasopharyngeal cancer, colon cancer, brain tumors, menstrual disorders, etc. Especially young people should pay special attention because young people have poor resistance, which can easily cause chromosomal abnormalities and leukemia. Children and pregnant women are more sensitive to formaldehyde, and long-term inhalation of pregnant women may cause neonatal deformities and even death.
