Toys from KidsWant and Toys “R” Us unqualified in inspection

According to an April 8 announcement of the 2020 Guangdong Province Children’s Toy Product Quality Supervision and Spot Checks issued by the Guangdong Provincial Market Supervision Administration, 214 products produced by 184 companies were unqualified. The Beijing News reporter noted that the random inspections or business premises for 3 substandard products involved the 3 stores of KidsWant and Toys “R” Us in Guangdong.

According to the notice, a “Plants vs. Zombies” electric toy (specification/model 666-1) produced by Xuanli Toys Factory in Chenghai District, Shantou City with the product trademark Xuanli Toys (specification/model 666-1), the projectile toy item was found to be unqualified. The business premise is Guangdong KidsWant Children’s Products Co., Ltd. Dongguan Houjie Kangle North Road Store.

Heyuan Leyuan Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. produced a “Leyuan Quanmin K Gebao” electronic learning machine (specification/model LY-704), spot checks found mechanical and physical properties and plastic bags used in packaging or toys. Two items of plastic film are unqualified, and the sampling site (or business site) is the Yangjiang Jiangcheng Store of Guangdong KidsWant Children’s Products Co., Ltd.

On April 8, a reporter from the Beijing News called the above two stores. Among them, a staff member of the Yangjiang Jiangcheng store of Guangdong KidsWant Children’s Products Co., Ltd. said that the store no longer sells this product.

A “soft bullet gun” ejection toy (specification/model FJ493) produced by Shantou Fengjia Toys Co., Ltd. has mechanical and physical properties, foreseeable and reasonable abuse, and the project is unqualified. The sampling site (or business site) is Toys “R” Us (China) Trading Co., Ltd. Zhuhai Phoenix South Road Store.

The reporter contacted the store, and a staff member said that the product had been removed from the shelves after receiving the relevant notice last year. When asked whether the recall was implemented, she said that she was “not sure”.

In addition, the notice shows that there are many types of toys that have unqualified phthalate content, including a “baby sound and light musical instrument” electric toy (specification/model C305); a plastic toy (specification/model K8160) produced by Yiwu Kaili Toys Technology Co., Ltd. with a trademark of New Kaili.

Data shows that in the plastics industry, phthalates are mainly used as plasticizers and added to plastics to increase elasticity, transparency, durability and service life. Soft plastic toys and children’s products containing phthalates may be put in the mouth by children. If they are left for a long enough time, they will cause the dissolution of phthalates to exceed safe levels and endanger children’s health.
