China’s Sempio soy sauce imports from South Korea fail inspection, distributor fined 177,100 yuan

The Beijing News reporter learned on March 2 from the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Market Supervision that two batches of imported Korean Sempio brewed soy sauce were found to be unqualified by the State Administration for Market Supervision, and the distributor Sempio (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. was acquired by the Minhang District of Shanghai. The Market Supervision Bureau imposed a fine of 177,100 yuan.

According to the announcement, 2 batches of Sempio Brewed Soy Sauce 501 (930mL/bottle, 2019-07-02, 2019-09-30) imported from South Korea by Sempio (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd., with a nominal name of SEMPIO FOODS COMPANY, have detected amino acids Unqualified nitrogen (calculated as nitrogen) project. Data show that amino acid nitrogen is one of the characteristic quality indicators of soy sauce. The higher the content, the better the quality of soy sauce and the stronger the umami taste. The unqualified item mainly affects the flavor of the product.

According to the announcement, after an investigation by the Shanghai Minhang District Market Supervision Bureau, Sempio (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. sold the above-mentioned unqualified food as follows: 2019-07-02 batches of 3,000 bottles were purchased, 3,000 bottles were sold, and no inventory; 2019-09 960 bottles were purchased in -30 batches, and 960 bottles were sold. There is no inventory. The total value of the above two batches is 35420 yuan. The Market Supervision Bureau of Minhang District, Shanghai has ordered Sempio (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. to stop selling, remove the shelves and recall unqualified foods, and file investigations into relevant units. At the same time, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Food Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China, Sempio (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. was fined 177,100 RMB yuan.

Public information shows that Sempio (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. was established in 2008 with a registered capital of RMB 25 million, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SEMPIO FOODS COMPANY. According to the introduction of Sempio’s Chinese official website, Sempio was established in South Korea in 1946 as a soy sauce factory. In 1958, Sempio established the first “Sauce Specialty Research Institute” in Korea to manage the quality of the sauce.
